Brasserie Bread

Last Saturday, I woke up with a certain excitement and anticipation at what the day held. Well, really, I was just excited about breakfast.

What’s so great about breakfasts anyway?

For starters, I rarely get to indulge in big, hearty breakfasts. My first meal of the day usually consists of either oatmeal and coffee, or toast and coffee. I rarely get to have big breakfasts of pancakes, sausages, bacon or eggs because I’m always bolting out the door and either to work (during weekdays) or to the gym (on weekends).

But this Saturday was different. I had a breakfast date with Mr J before he flew to Melbourne for a weekend getaway (from me! BAHAHAHA!)… but really it was just an excuse that he see me so I can drop him off at the airport (and he get to save $30 off the train ticket). I’m so mean, aren’t I?

So after reluctantly getting up at 8am on a Saturday morning, I maneouvered my way around King Georges Rd, through M5 and the airport tunnel, past the piers of Botany Bay, and VOILA! Brasserie Bread was the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Being crowned as one of the best breakfast eats in Sydney is no joke, and Brasserie Bread takes pride in this accolade. There is a certain buzz of industrial eagerness as cars upon cars pull up on the roadside next to and opposite the cafe, and a constant stream of customers await for the prize Saturday 10am breakfast tables. Mr J and I were quite lucky as he instantly scored a table for two, and as our usual eatery waltz, I order for him while he mans the table (yes, we have been together for so long that this has become routine!).

Another routine waltz is my coffee to his orange juice. I cannot start my day without coffee, and his breakfast isn’t complete without orange juice.

The coffee is full bodied, a little on a strong side which is perfect. I usually take double shot latte’s, but since this was a small cup, I concluded that the strong taste was attributed to the smaller serving sizes. Nevertheless, the coffee was exceptional and the freshly squeezed orange juice was just right.

While waiting for our food to arrive, I decided to walk around the cafe and on to the bakery section of Brasserie Bread. There’s another long queue for the pastries, bread & coissants, but I cannot justify a trip to Brasserie Bread without buying, well, bread! I bought the traditional sourdough bread and of course, it was as fabulous as I anticipated it would be (even until now I’m still munching on it with some camembert and stuffed olives).

We’ve done our researched, been to Brasserie Bread on a quiet day, and tried a few dishes on the menu. Mr J fell in love with the slow cooked lamb before and this time he is ordering the same dish again. I, on the other hand, followed Leona of Pigged Out’s advice and opted for the infamous sourdough pancakes.

The lamb was tender but full of flavour, and the spinash and potato hash were perfect with the lamb. I’m not a big lamb eater; in fact, before this I’ve only ever eaten lamb twice my whole life, but this dish was absolutely delicious there was just no way I’d let it pass.

I think this is one of Brasserie Bread’s signature dish, seeing that using sourdough in pancakes is a feat never been tackled before. Again, I’m not a fan of pancakes but this plate of colourful goodness was just perfect and the moreish. The honeycomb cream complimented the pancakes well too as it cuts through the sour/sweetness of the stewed berries.

There was also a Saturday kids’ cooking class that was about to start, so I quickly took a photo of “the production room” before the kids went in.

Big, long breakfasts are always a luxury for me, therefore a trip to Brasserie Bread’s always a treat for me. It’s one of those places that you can recommend to others knowing that it is really somewhere worthwhile to go to – fresh bread, lovely service, and most importantly, fabulous food!

Ciabatta – Brasserie Bread

Dear Brasserie Bread,

Hi, I’m Patricia, and I’m addicted to your ciabatta loaf.

I’ve been munching on this one loaf every single day of the week since I bought it on Monday… and my god! I’m actually speechless.

Yes I eat it like this...

Mmmmm.....

Mmmmm.....

Stuffed olives!

Stuffed olives!

And then I got a bit sick of the olives and brie, went back to the fridge, and saw the jar of mandarin marmalade that I made during the “save the caramel” escapade the other day. So what did I do with it? Well…

Mmmmandarins!

Love,

Me.
